Document Summary
An evolutionary psychologist attempts to understand the extent to which human behaviors have been shaped by the principles of natural and sexual selection. If a trait or behavior is innate, then there should, it seems, be a reason why it increases reproductive success. It is self-evident that aggression will enhance the reproductive success of an individual. It is self-evident that cooperation will enhance the reproductive success of an individual. It is self-evident that disentangling the evolutionary roots of complex behaviors requires a careful, multidisciplinary approach. For humans, it is often the case that acquired behaviors override or modify inherent behaviors. Inherent behaviors are biological, not learned, automatic: temperature control. Definitely an inherent behavior: eating, aggression, sex. All mammals have it, very similar across species: beha(cid:448)iors that do(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e to (cid:271)e lear(cid:374)ed, (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t tou(cid:272)h the(cid:373) consciously, part of an automatic system.
