PSY BEH 11A Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Phantom Limb, Charley Horse, Mental Model
Document Summary
Many ways in which conscious experiences fall apart. Can learn something when things do not work. Had terrible accident & that needed to amputate. Many tragic cases: wake up in hospital & are surprised limb is gone. Patient believes that they feel that they still have the limb. Do not believe until they see that the limb is gone. Arms, legs, nose, genitals, breast, appendix, etc. Anything that can get cut off -> often will be phantom feeling. Feelings are not second class -> very vivid. Suggests that there"s something in cortex of the brain involved. Somehow brain is responsible for these sensations. One issue with phantom limb patients is suicide. Unable to get relief from the pain. Not unrealistic pains -> feel very real to the person having the experience. Charley horse cramp in middle of the night. Can be relieved if you get up & fix it.
