Goal: determine a person"s level of emotionality when presented with certain info. Machine that measures human responses to questions. No absolute measure of autonomic arousal can indicate the presence/absence of a lie, b/c each person"s level of autonomic arousal is diff. Polygraphers ask a variety of questions some critical and some irrelevant. Measures heart rate, perspiration, and nervous system arousal to gain a generally reliable estimate of whether or not the subject of the polygraph is being truthful. Skin conductivity (called the galvanic skin or electrodermal response) is measured through electrodes attached to a subject"s fingertips. A typical examination includes a pretest phase during which the technique is explained and each test question reviewed. The pretest interview is designed to ensure that subjects understand the questions and to induce a subject"s concern about being deceptive.
