Learning = acquiring knowledge or skills through experience or instruction. Memory retaining that knowledge over time. Really wanted psychology to be at the level of a hard science. Wanted to focus on what could be measured empirically. Doesn"t matter principles are being applied to contextually. Psychology is the science of behavior - not of thoughts, feelings, or sensations. Same laws cover all organisms & all content. Learning is based on establishing associations between stimuli & environment. What a person learns depends almost entirely on the environment. Comes from repeated associations between stimulus & behavioral response. *behaviorism developed partly because of concerns about psychological method of introspection. Nature v. nurture -> behaviorists focused on nurture. Problem: maier in 1930"s illustrated with his research. Were just long enough so that could not simply pull one over & reach the other rope. Participants were supposed to take hold of one rope & tie the two of them together.
