The way you understand a problem determines how you try to x it. In recent year more treatment is done through drug therapies instead of inpatient hospitalization. These are called biomedical therapies: models of psychotherapy. Emotionally charged, con ding relationship between a trained healer and the sufferer. 50-66% of clinicians use techniques form multiple models. Stems from experience with conditional positive regard: cure. History of conditioning and reinforcement for dysfunctional behaviors and associations: cure. Learn new ones: unconcerned with speci c causation. Pair undesirable behavior with positive or negative stimuli to replace previously conditioned response: operant strategies (reinforcement-based) Set up situation to reward desirable behavior or punish undesirable behavior. Before treatment fear is result of phobia: during treatment relaxation is paired with the phobia instead of fear. The end goal is that the phobia produces a relaxed state and no fear associated. Anxiety hierarchy: move from least to most anxiety provoking situation.
