Document Summary

Textbook used: psychology 8th - gleitman, gross, reisberg. People change their behavior because of social pressure (perceived and actual) Someone came in with the participant, participant doesn"t know them, participant convinced by the person to believe that person"s lie. Directly being involved with other people = more pressure to conform. Informational influence: people"s desires to be correct; if situation is ambiguous, more likely to look to other people for the correct response. Normative influence: people go along w/ crowd because they want to be liked; don"t want to appear foolish; want to fit the norm. Role of expertise: if you"re an expert in something, you"re less likely to go along with the group if the group is wrong. One person breaks the consensus: you"re also likely to break the consensus and say what you think is right despite other people saying something else. Also more likely to say what"s actually correct when everything is anonymous.
