PSY BEH 11C Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Twin, Psychosis, Psychological Abuse
Document Summary
Anxiety disorders are highly comorbid -> frequently happen at same time. If parent has one, much more likely to have one. Twin studies -> if one identical twin has one, much more likely to have one than if have fraternal twin with one. Much more than gad, if someone in family has ocd -> much more likely to develop ocd. Evidence that these brain differences vary between anxiety disorders. Phobias: amygdala more active (over-reactive) when see what you are afraid of than normal people are. People can develop phobia without ever having traumatic experience. Might learn through another person that should be afraid. Some evidence that more afraid of things that were poisonous or harmful to ancestors -> more likely to develop phobias of things that can kill them. Risk factors for phobia: traumatic experience, vicarious conditioning, evolutionary preparedness . Risk factors for ptsd: severity, social support. The more traumatic the experience, the more likely you are to develop it.
