Document Summary
Family systems therapy: emphasizes patterns of interaction among family members, rather than the characteristics of individuals, mental health problems caused by maladaptive family interactions. It is arbitrary which member manifests symptoms, called the identified patient : necessary to work with the whole family, goals, consequently, resolution of identified patient"s presenting problems. Communication patterns: emphasis on content and form, which members speak directly to others, frequent interruptions, who speaks first, whether difficult issues are confronted or avoided, rules: unspoken, unplanned guidelines that influence communication. Communication patterns: explicit communication: obvious content or meaning. Implicit communication: non-verbal, tone of voice, facial expression, body language, using pre-existing knowledge; reading between the lines : double bind: the implicit message does not match the explicit message, and the implicit message is denied. Chaos functional balance rigidity: maladaptive communication patterns (passive aggressive comments, lying, harming, alliances: subsystem alliances, others are excluded, parental authority: parent-child role-reversals. Looking for triangles, double binds, positive/negative feedback loops, quality of communication etc.
