In order for a person to give up a significant reinforcer like drugs or alcohol, the alternative needs to be more rewarding. If punishment cured addiction, there would be far less addiction. Many clients face difficult consequences of substance use. Lab animals will self-administer many drugs, prioritizing over other powerful reinforcers like food and sex. Cra seeks to increase positive reinforcement for sobriety and undermine rewards associated with drug use. Focus on connecting people with natural alternative sources of reinforcement that are inconsistent with substance use. Procedures of cra usually take about 6-18 sessions. Menu of options used flexibly, as appropriate for individual clients. Length and content of cra not prescribed. Some clients need only a few sessions, some need several. Counselor and client negotiate period of abstinence the client is willing to try. Set goals together that client feels are reasonable, appropriate, and obtainable. Having time out from drinking allows client to experience sensation of being sober.
