Children with antisocial behavior or conduct disorder have higher risk of developing sud. Adhd, depression, schizophrenia, ptsd, etc. comorbid with sud. Bringing together group of high-risk individuals may normalize problem behavior or teach new bad habits. Ideal to intervene with people at lower end of severity spectrum. Most people who meet criteria for aud are not alcohol-dependent. 20% of men and 10% of women drink more than niaaa recommended limits. Historically, problem drinkers were thought of as not needing intervention. College binge drinkers 6x more likely to be diagnosed with alcohol dependence 10 years later. Auds usually easier to turn around in earlier stages. Alcohol-related incidents constitute leading cause of death before age 35. Drowning, fals, fire, hypothermia, firearms, traumatic injury, suicide, car crashes, pedestrian deaths, overdose. Complete series of questionnaires and given feedback about level of drinking, liver function, alcohol-related problems, dependence symptoms, and cognitive functioning. Set individualized goals as upper limits for drinking.
