Document Summary
Viewing competition as a process: four stages of competition, objective competitive situation. Research: gill"s research, male are more win-orientated, female is more goal orientated, response. If the decision is not to compete, then the response stops there. Response to compete can occur at three different levels: behavioral, ex: decide what type of opponent you prefer to play. Someone better than you, so you can improve. Someone worse than you, so you can win. Someone equal to you, so you have a challenge: physiological, ex: your response might be that your heart starts to beat faster and your hands become cold/clammy, psychological, internal. Ex: perceive ability, motivation, and confidence: external. Research: marten"s research, competition can be influenced--enhance or diminished--in the 4 stages of competition, consequences. Consequences: positive or negative: equate positive with success and negative with failure, key point: competition is inherently neither good nor bad. It is neither a productive nor a destructive strategy--it is simply a process.
