PSYCH 46A Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Herpesviral Encephalitis, Temporal Lobe, Amygdala
Document Summary
Ep: diagnosed with herpes simplex encephalitis, can recount teenage/ childhood experiences and world war 2, damage to his medial temporal lobe, hippocampus, and amygdala. So these scientists from ucsd and alan canada visited ep"s home. Ep suffered this acute virus that damaged his brain but he can replicate complex drawing and can repeat words back :o. And he can remember his times about being in electronics/ software, but he keeps repeating that story over and over again. Also does not remember jennifer"s (lady scientist"s) name :( Basically ep lives in this state of permanent present can"t remember most of the past (he can still remember old memories like different street routes in hayward and castro. Valley and essentially stuff before the damage) so he does not know streets in sd. Another important point: hippocampus can"t be where memories are permanently stored because he still remembers his past.
