PSYCH 7A - Lecture 13 - Development
Prenatal Development
3 Stages of prenatal development:
Germinal Period (First 7 – 10 days)
Embryonic Period (2nd week – 8th week)
Fetal Period (9th week – birth)
Germinal Period
Zygote – an egg that has been fertilized by a sperm cell
Cells divide
Differentiation – specialization in structure and function
After a week, the mass of cells (now called a blastocyst) consists of about 100 cells
Embryonic Period
Outer part of blastocyst attaches to the uterine wall, forming the placenta.
The blastocyst inner cells become the embryo.
Over this two month period:
all major organs begin to form
heart and liver begin to function
embryo grows to about an inch
Fetal Period
9 weeks – embryo definitely looks human! It’s now called a fetus.
6 months – organs developed enough to give fetus a chance at survival.
Fetus is responsive to sound.
Teratogens
Placenta – keeps potentially harmful substances from reaching the embryo or fetus
Teratogens – harmful substances that can reach the embryo or fetus.
Teratogens include: viruses, drugs, and many other chemicals
