Genetic factors: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, and attention deficit disorder (adhd) Biological risk factors: intrauterine exposure to alcohol or cigarettes, environmental exposure to lead, malnutrition of pregnancy, & birth trauma. Social factors: quality of relationship between infant and caregiver. Maternal depression is a risk factor for depressive & anxiety disorders. Child abuse and neglect is a risk factor for depression, conduct disorder, delinquency, & impaired social functioning with peers. Autism inability to engage in social interaction, prevalence in boys is 4 to 5 times higher than in girls. Mood disorders -- bipolar disorder, depression, & suicide 15-19 year olds (boys five times more likely then girls to commit & girls twice as likely to attempt). Adhd behavior disorder, 4 times higher in boys than girls. Depression (particularly after the loss of a spouse) Highest rates of suicide, a consequence of depression. Increased risk of side effects of drug treatments. Interactions with other medications used for other disorders.
