Disease of the slums, prevalent in lower east side of new york @ turn of. Killed thousands (about 4000 ppl) in 19th century. Typhoid fever comes from salmonella typhi causes it. George soper was supposed to find the cause. To get rid of the bacteria, abrasive scrubbing is needed. Cook was named mary, made ice cream w/ peaches so the bacteria could be on it. The typhi bacteria can only survive on uncooked food. Healthy carrier of disease - mary mallon (healthy carrier of typhoid fever) Mary, claims she has never had typhoid, so she believes she cant be a carrier. Soper asked her for specimens, but mary refused. Soper thinks under specific conditions, she can cause an epidemic. Hermann biggs - committed to wiping out disease with science. Josephine baker assigned to get specimen from mary. Committed life to poor, and the health of poor but she had nothing good to say about them.
