Preschool test of self control: self control refers to ability to regulate our emotions allowing for the better use of rational power of mind, 1960s mischel studied self control in preschoolers by devising the marshmallow test. Determines if child can resist a smaller, available reward (one mini marshmallow) Determines if child can resist smaller, available reward in order to get delayed larger reward (2 mini marshmallows) Choosing the one available marshmallow knows as example of immediate gratification. Waiting to get 2 marshmallows serves as example of delayed gratification. Very few children could just wait in quiet contemplation. Waiting was too unpleasant for most children and they gave into eating the one marshmallow. Self control and ego depletion theory and research on self-control conducted by social psychologists: baumeister developed strength model of self control.
