Man"s life is state of nature = fear & selfishness. Lived during english civil war & wanted to write about single ruler. Man"s liberty needs to be limited enough that they help each other instead of hurting each other. Enter into social contract to avoid constant war. Individuals have no value -> hypothetical rational consent. *locke & rousseau both think people have right to overthrow the government while. Hobbes believes that citizens need to solely obey authority. Life is state of nature was reasonably enjoyable but property was not safe. People assumed to be equal to one another & naturally respect each other. Entered social contract due to desire to preserve property. Surrendered the right to preserve & maintain order & enforce law of nature. Right to life, liberty, & estate -> has to be fulfilled by government. If government ceases to be valid needs to be overthrown.
