Carries us through phases of the state of nature. First phase: the phase of man as a happy savage that most critically lives without a state of reason. Self preservation compassion/ pity (especially for other members of his species) Breaks down because of some fatal chance occurrence (no longer possible when they begin to cooperate with each other) Part of what puts together different groupings of society. People living together harmoniously, but not cooperating or collaborating, thus reaping all the benefits of this nation society. Third phase: cooperation through agriculture and metallurgy. Reason generates/ amour propre (esteem depends on the opinion of others) One of the worst features human beings have developed. State of reflection is that contrary to nature. The man who meditates is a depraved animal. Break down into the creation of civil society. Occurs because a rich man effectively tricks ordinary people into creating civil society. Give up living in themselves and live in other people"s" judgements.
