The defective parts of the self, including threatening thoughts & emotions, are mentally transferred to others through the process of projection. Maladaptive defense mechanisms -> poor substitutes for rational problem solving. Projective identification: used to relieve disturbing thoughts & emotions experienced by those facing difficult problems -> recipients of projective identification may face danger since they are now defined as the enemy** There are two steps involved in the use of projective identification: Those who use projective identification create tension within society by smearing character of innocent individuals. Id applies considerable influence upon ego -> results in experience of conflict between the two psychic systems. Ego has to be taught how to evolve into the rational entity of the mind. Ego has to determine rational ways to satisfy the id. One of major propositions of freudian psychoanalysis is that the ego begins its development in childhood by splitting off from the id.
