Thinks that you have rational justification, or you don"t. Relativist would believe rational justification is whatever i or my community thinks it is. Truth relativist -> what"s true depends on who is talking about truth. Descartes was an absolutist about truth as well. Being a relativist w/respect to truth is more radical -> truth changing often. Concerned about differentiating from knowledge & belief. Wanted to make sure his biases (from going to a jesuit school) didn"t affect his ability to find the truth. Took rational justification to work like euclidian geometry: house analogy. Worried that he was indoctrinated w/training from the church. Wants to get rid of all his biases -> starts out by doubting everything. Building a house -> have to tear everything down & build a solid foundation. According to descartes all knowledge founded on clear & distinct perception. Judgements have to come from pure rationality.
