There are various levels of participation in the field. Drawback - cannot seek clarification, ask questions, etc. Researcher identity is known researcher participates fully in activities of group, but is not an insider (degree of distance) Researcher participates fully, but covertly; viewed as insider. Some claim deception is never warranted (ethical absolutism)
