This week I was able to see how Luker’s sociological theories and concepts apply to
empirical examples of the sport of baseball. For example, Luker argued that our position on the
controversial issue of abortion is shaped by our “world views”. This means that we were socially
constructed to not only think a certain way based on our past and experiences, but actually
believe that this way of thinking is ethical. This is the reason why it’s so hard to change the way
we perceive certain topics. This is vastly important to the sport of baseball because a new
method of calculating and analyzing optimal playing strategies was brought into effect which
replaced the traditional way of evaluating. This new system was known as sabermetrics. It is
defined as the application of statistical analysis to baseball records, especially in order to
evaluate and compare the performance of individual players. This relates to Luker’s ideas
because it was difficult to break the old system and implement this new one since old-school
analysts were never exposed to such a system. This new application revolutionized the way
players were evaluated forever and certainly changed baseball’s “world views” of analytics.
