BIOL 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Adventitiousness, Rhizosphere, Eudicots
Document Summary
Outline: roots, root functions, root organization & structure. 1 & 2 growth: origin of lateral roots. The root system is essential for plant survival & productivity. Rhizosphere modification and interactions: when are root tissues formed, root tissues are formed during embryogenesis! Fibrous root system of a monocot (i. e. corn: primary root is short lived adventitious roots take over, majority of the root systems is formed from stem-born roots. In a fibrous root system, no one root is more prominent than others. Adventitious roots: are derived from stems and serve many functions, re-rooting, nutritional, structural support. Taproot system of a eudicot (i. e. bean: primary root = taproot, 1 root gives rise to lateral roots. Iterative (frequent) root formation produces a highly branched root system. In a taproot system, one root is more prominent: generally the taproot penetrates the soil deeper than fibrous root systems, can still make adventitious roots.
