Document Summary

Intraspecific - requirements of individuals of the same species are more similar; compared to those of different species. Interspecific competition occurs between different insect species: result is reduction in growth potential, some detriment of growing the species together. Interference competition: exploitative competition, example: two friends at starbucks sipping on a latte. Exploitative will be the one who drinks the latte the fastest. Interference will be the one who"s straw gets bent from the other individual to prevent them from successfully drinking. Outcome is affected by extrinsic factors (temp and parasites) Competition coefficients: area of each square (inside the box) = resource demand of each species, everything in between is where species 1 and 2 are co-occurring, less than 1; Intra is more/stronger than inter: species having a comparative advantage over the other. In between k2 is decreasing and k1 is increasing. K1 is competitively dominant: species 2 eliminates species 1 (case #2, species 1 and 2 always coexist (case #3)
