Pest management - lecture 16 3/1/16 (epa) pesticide is any substance/mixture of substances intended for destroying, preventing, repelling, or mitigating any pest. Can kill a variety of organisms, not just 1 targeted. Ideal pesticide would be narrow spectrum (species specific) Slow to degrade & persist in the enrvironment. Selective herbicide - kill only certain kinds of plants (broadleaf herbicide, grass herbicide) Non selective herbicide - kill all vegetation. Malaria - mosquito borne (ddt kills mosquitos) Pests eat & destroy of the world"s crops. Farmers save - for every they invest in pesticides. Bioaccumulation: the buildup of persistent pesticide/other toxic substance in organisms body. Biological magnification: increase concentration of toxic chemicals in tissues of organism at high trophic levels. Global distillation: occurs with semi-volatiles like ddts which get vaporized in warm climates into the atmosphere and condensed back to earth in colder climates.
