Lecture 8 - food resources chapter 19, 2/2/16. Clones take same genetics from parent and clone another. Ex. of transgenic animals (extra genes from another animal) Enviropig - genetic modification helps absorb/process phytic acid from grain. manure is hella reduced in phosphorus content (manure = cleaner, don"t need to put stuff into the feed) Increased use of antibiotics lead to increase in resistance vs. these, creates superplants. Cipro/baytril is routinely fed to chickens (+5 of weight gains through this) Hormones are injected/implanted into animals to increase muscle/milk production. Little amount of hormones found in milk/meat. 1999, scientists concluded concentrations are safe bc so low compared to natural hormone levels in body. Europe bans bc neg. effects related to hormone treatments. Solutions to these problems sustainable methods - maintain soil productivity/healthy ecological balance with minimal long term impacts. Natural predator/prey relationships instead of pesticides (ladybugs!) Limited use of pesticides w sustainable agriculture practices.
