Obedience: milgram experience showed people were more likely to listen to an authority figure, even if the instruction is inhumane thought that the authority figures would be accountable for any actions. Leads to fact to always question authority: stanford prison experiment showed how officers adjusted to their position. Guards escalated their abuse of power every day. Individualistic- achievement oriented, focus on autonomy, dispositional perspective, independent, analytic thinking style. Collectivistic- relationship oriented, focus on group autonomy, situational perspective, independent, holistic thinking style: cognitive dissonance- when your thoughts and behaviors conflict to your attitude, so your attitude is changed. Stereotypes lead to prejudice, which turns into discrimination. Initiation effects- the harder it is to get into a group, the more rewarded you will like the group. Has effects of cognitive dissonance, where trying so hard would change attitude to like the group more: hazing- dangerous as people may take things out of control.
