Document Summary

Key terms: nucleus, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, organelles, Endomembrane system, cytoskeleton, cell wall, plastids, cell junctions. The cell the smallest unit that still retains the characteristics of life. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. There are two major types of cells distinguished by their internal organization: prokaryotic cells. There is no separation between their dna and the rest of the cell. Organelles (membrane bound structure with a specific function) comparable to eukaryotic cells are absent. Phospholipid bilayer (fatty acid) make up the membrane. Dna is coiled in to a nucleoid region. The dna is organized and contained within the nucleus. Algae, animals, plants etc: plasma membrane. (cell membrane) Bio - chapter 4 page 2: plasma membrane. (cell membrane) The most conspicuous organelle that houses the cell"s dna. Instructions for building proteins are contained in dna. nucleoli (sing = nucleolus) containing rna and proteins. Includes membrane bound organelles and the endomembrane system.
