Document Summary

Atom, element, molecule, compound, subatomic particles, ion, isotope, orbitals, Matter is anything that takes up space and mass. An element is a substance that can not be broken down to other substances. Out of 94 naturally occurring elements, about 25 are essential for life. The most abundant elements in living organisms are carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Most of the hydrogen and oxygen are in the form of water. Carbon is the most important structural element in living organisms. Elements required by organisms in minute quantities. An atom in the smallest portion of a substance that retains the properties of an element. Atomic nucleus- where proton & neutron are tightly packed. Atomic nucleus in center & electrons outside around it. To write put mass number on top left. atomic number on bottom left. Atomic number- the number of protons in an element. ex. carbon=6. Mass number- number of protons + number of neutrons. ex. carbon=12.
