Document Summary

Animal fluid: interstitial fluid lies between cells and other tissues, osmoregulation maintains water and solute concentrations. Excretory system works closely with cardiovascular system. Nitrogenous waste: protein/nucleic acid digestion produce toxic ammonia, convert to urea, uric acid is not water soluble. Urea is made in liver from protein digestion. Uric acid is made from nucleotide digestion. Excretory system: kidneys, ureter, bladder, urethra. Kidney function: filter water, ions, waste from blood, adjust filtrate concentration and return most to blood. Structure of kidney: renal capsule, inner renal medulla, renal pelvis. Urinary path: kidney to ureter to bladder to urethra, skeletal muscle allows control of urine. Nephron: functional unit of kidney, consists of renal tubule and associate capillaries, capillaries meet nephron in a structure called the glomerulus, filtration in bowmans capsule. Urine formations: forms in nephrons by 3 processes. Glomerulus: bowmans capsule + glomerular capillaries = glomerulus, glomerular capillaries have large pores.
