Document Summary

Matter is any substance that has mass and occupies space: 3 physical states. Gas: the sate of matter is affected by a change in temperature. Solid: exhibits definite volume and definite shape. Particles are tightly packed together: very strong intermolecular forces, and little atomic motion. Liquid: has a definite volume but indefinite shape, as the shape changes when the container changes, a higher motion indicates a higher temperature. Amorphous solids lack long-range order, i. e. glass, plastic. Crystalline solid has atoms or molecules in patterns with long-range repeating orders: i. e. table salt, diamond. The atoms or molecules are free to move relative to one another due to the space in between them. A pure substance is made up of only one component and it can not be physically separated, its composition is invariant: elements are the basic building block of matter.
