CHM 2040 Lecture 1: Chapter 1 Part 2
Document Summary
Composition is what is it actually made of. Matter is anything that has math and occupies space. The particles are packed tight in a xed position. Atoms and molecules very close together, strong interactive force. A very speci c long-range repeating order = crystalline solid. Packing of atoms and molecules is speci c and repeating. Sharp edges, facets, plane, fracture points will have clean edges. Will not naturally occur with very de ned edges and straight planes, breaks will have different corner shapes. Particles are closely packed, but have some ability to move around. Can take shape of container and ow but cannot expand. Freedom of motion and not held together, constantly ying around and bumping into each other. On average, there is a lot of empty space between particles. They are compressible, and can compress and expand. Type of particle, arrangement, and attractions/ attatchments.
