Tuesday, august 23, 2016 4:30 pm: everything around us is matter. Chemistry - science that seeks to understand the behavior of atoms and molecules: proper@es of macer= atoms and molecules. Atoms - submicroscopic particles: molecules - product of 2+ atoms in a de nite arrangement held together by chemical bonds. Properties of matter are determined by the atoms and molecules that compose it. Scientists try to understand the universe through empirical knowledge gained through experiments. Hypothesis - explanation of an observation: good hypothesis can be tested. Experiment - set of highly controlled procedures designed to test a hypothesis: generates observations that will either validate/invalidate the hypothesis. Law of conservation of mass: when similar observations are consistently made, can lead to scienti c law/ States and composition of matter: matter - anything that occupies space. Solid - de ned shape and volume, cannot change much. Liquid - molecules have movement, can pass each other.
