Document Summary

To name anion, change ending on the element name to -ide. Metals whose ions have only one possible charge have a cation name that is the same to their metal name. Metals whose ions can have more than one possible charge: determine charge of cation by charge on anion and name=metal name with roman numeral charge in parenthesis. Metals lose electrons to form ions with positive charges and nonmetals gain electrons to form ions with negative charges. Group 7a halogens form anions with -1 charge. Group 6a nonmetals form anions with -2 charge. Electrons must be added or subtracted from an element to form an ion. When it does this, it gives the element the same number of electrons as the nearest noble gas. Elements have their charge when they form an ion because they must gain or lose electrons to gain stability (or same number of electrons as noble gas).
