Document Summary

Mono lake- terminal lake; lots of input, but no output except evaporation. Lots of algae survive in very salty lake; insects eat algae; gulls eat insects. Scale: different phenomenon occur at different scales: ex. Matter: anything that occupies space and mass; stuff that makes up universe. Mass: amount of matter that an object contains. Weight: the force that gravity puts on mass. Parts of an atom: electrons, electron shells, nucleus, neutron (no charge), proton (positive charge) Atomic number: number of protons in an element. Atomic weight: how many protons and neutrons in nucleus. Molecule: a particle with more than one atom. Compound: a molecule that contains more than one element. Isotopes: atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus; different masses but the same atomic number: ex. Isotopic signature: ratio of different isotopes in a substance. Radioactive decay: the spontaneous release of material from the nucleus of an unstable isotope.
