Document Summary

Organizational structures that we use to interface with all media (music, movies, books, etc. ) Genre can be a shorthand way to describe a set of formal characteristics. Genre helps us understand our expectations, which are a big part of the viewing experience. Genre allows for more formal experimentation, as general audiences are more accepting of them in this form. Helps connect observations about formal elements to their overall audience impact. A set of rules that filmmakers follow. An agreed upon set of characteristics established by critics, filmmakers, scholars, and audiences. The name comedy covers a couple different things but we are almost always talking about films that use humor as a driving force to elicit laughter and amusement in reaction to identification or discomfort. Comedy is a genre, not just of film, but of literature and theatre. This is an obvious point, but an important one. Cinematic comedy has many unique aesthetics and subgenres, as does any cinematic genre.
