Document Summary

Study of the immune system and immune responses. Ab remains in blood plasma, lymph, etc and protect against pathogen that stimulated them. Involves multiple cell types (macros, t-helper, cytotoxic t, etc. ) Monoclonal antibodies: purified ab very specific for single ag, made from hybridoma (hybrid of plasma cell and tumor cell). Iga monomer or dimer, 10-20% of total saliva, tears, colostrum, breast milk, mucous. Igd found on surface of b cells. (<1%) Ige role in allergic responses (<1%) Only class that can cross placenta long-lived. Antigen: any foreign substance able to stimulate ab production. Direct interaction with b cells ab. 1st signal - mig binds repeat units of ag. Agammaglobulinemia failure to produce ab in response to ag. Activate complement for ag-ab immune complexes . Materials that artificially induce immunity to a pathogen. Contains enough antigens to yield protective ab. Inactivated killed by heat or chemicals, not as good as live. Subunit - acellular, antigenic portions of pathogen.
