Inflammation of membranes that surround brain and spinal cord. Enterovirus, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, mumps virus, arboviruses, polioviruses, adenoviruses, measles virus, herpes simplex, varicella. Symptoms: sudden fever, headache, stiff neck, photophobia, vomiting. Preferentially infects/destroys motor neurons, muscle weakness and acute flaccid paralysis. Severe muscle pain, stiff neck & back. Isolation of polio virus in stool samples, csf. Only endemic in afghanistan, nigeria and pakistan. Mental depression, restlessness, malaise, headache, fever, paralysis (lower limbs then upward), salivation, throat spasms, convulsions, death by respiratory failure. Severe infections: headache, high fever, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, spastic paralysis, death. Diagnosis: immunodiagnostics, cell culture, amplified nucleic acid- based tests. Affects children < 5 yr the most. 1st free living organism with genome sequenced. Hib vaccine only covers encapsulated strains. Septicemia endotoxin, dic (disseminated intravasculare coagulation) Meningitis death in ~24 hr if untreated. High fever, meningism (stiff neck), severe headache, vomiting, purpura (skin lesions), photophobia, chills, altered mental status, or seizures.
