Inspired by black dance bands (nyc) in 1920s. The dominant force of jazz and popular music in 1930s. Small improvising new orleans ensembles becoming big bands playing arrangements. Horns become sections: 1 clarinet becomes 3-5 saxe and winds, 1 trumpet becomes 2-5 trumpets, 1 trombone becomes 2-4 trombones. Needed large rooms for dance halls to dance big dances. Roseland (broadway and 57th, dancehall) next to letterman. Exam 3 (november 6th thursday) chapters 5 & 6. Exam 4 (november 25th tuesday, last class) chapters 7 and beyond. 40000+ musicians employed: local dance halls, hotel ballrooms, etc, live, touring bands criss-crossing the us, mca (& other) booking agencies schedule. Record sales saved by big bands: 90% decline from 1921-1933, bands account for about 70% of 1930s sales. Live radio broadcasts ( remotes : called remotes because they are actually performing someplace else, promote bands (and sponsors, a way of getting recordings heard for more sales.
