PHI 2010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Rational Basis Review, Continuity Equation, Pyrrho
Document Summary
All the perceptions of the human mind resolve themselves into two distinct kinds, which i shall call impressions and ideas : perceptions: any event that happens in the mind, different than the talk of ideas with locke and berkeley. More inclusive concept: idea: anything that happens in the mind. One broad class of mental events: those perceptions, which enter with most force and violence, we may name impressions . Impressions: any event that is very forceful, intense, lively, vivid. Sensory experiences: by ideas i mean the faint images of these in thinking and reasoning . Proof 1: we can identify every idea"s impression(s): when we think of a golden mountain , the same for the idea of god . Proof 2: no impression, no idea: a blind man can form no notion of colors , a man of mild manners can form no idea of inveterate revenge or cruelty .
