It is more accurate to express speech rate measures in syllable-per-second than words-per-second because words can vary in length from five or more syllables. Measuring speech rate using a stopwatch is not considered accurate enough for research purposes because of the time it take to notice that the speech has stopped and to then stop the watch. Reaction time: time it takes for the person to react and stop the watch. Not typical of voiced stop is in american english. American speakers do produce negative vot values. Research here at ucf has shown that it may be more prevalent than previously suspected. Some speech disorders that have investigated vot are: Vot values are longer for words at the beginning of the sentence compared to the wors. Fundamental frequency is the most basic frequency measure.
