SPA 3011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Vocal Tract, Strobe Light, Stroboscope
Document Summary
Physiological measures of speech are a direct recording of articulation or speech movements, not the acoustic signal of speech. There is less research on physiological measures of speech than there is with acoustic measures because they require more specialized and expensive equipment and expertise. In some cases they are more invasive and may require medical supervision. Two measures for respiration: 1) strain belts 2) electronic transducers that measure chest wall displacement. Pneumotachograph: a mask placed over the face with sensors for measuring air flow during various speech tasks. Electromyography or emg for short: used to record muscle activity. Two main types of muscle activities or emg recordings: surface and. In the surface method, electrodes are affixed to the surface of the skin and these electrodes are used to record the activity of the muscles below the surface of the skin. It is less sure that recordings with this method reflect the activity of a single muscle group.
