ANTHRO 124A Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Matrilocal Residence, Exogamy, Patrilocal Residence
Document Summary
Chimpanzee intergroup relations: for the most part they are initiated and conducted by males. Pacification of intergroup relations: we recognize our in groups, don"t kill kin, reduces the number of our genes passed down, aside from recognizing kin we can also recognize our in-laws, consanguinity: those you are related to by blood. Reciprocal exogamy creates a tribe-like structure where groups within the tribe have relatively peaceful relations. Inter-tribal warfare is still possible and probable, as the benefits of reciprocal exogamy won"t apply. Human residence patterns: so far we have focused on a system of patrilocal residence/female dispersal. But human groups represent a much more diverse set of residential structures . Chapais proposes that once males can peaceably interact with males of other groups, different residential patterns become possible. Remember these terms: philopatry: the behavior of remaining in or returning to one" birthplace, dispersal: the behavior of leaving one"s natal home.
