Document Summary
Bioarchaeology is the study of human remains (skeletons) Mortuary studies focus on the surroundings of those human remains from artifacts to burial landscapes. From skeletons we can discern age, sex, height, manner of death, chronic disease, relationships through dna, handedness, occupation, and body modifications. Spitalfields project studied bioarchaeology of known persons to learn about life in the 1700s and to calibrate age profiles. Bioarchaeologists are more focused on the recent dead. An archaeological site is a place where past human activities occurred. Things that can seem to be surprisingly recent. There are laws that protect archaeological sites. There are four important laws that protect the past in the us. Creating a list of important historical sites and prioritizing. Identifying places we wanted to preserve and protect. Recognizing that groups today that are the inheritors of the historic record (tribal people in the us- native peoples) Maybe museums were not the best place for people"s collective heritage.
