From either of the assigned readings, select one formal element about the San Marco
cup and explain its signiļ¬cance. Please write or type out your responses to turn in.
Formal Element:
Mythological Motifs/Iconography(Kalavrezou/Walker)
The ļ¬gures depicted and expressed, like Hercules, Zeus, and Apollo for example, were
able to communicate to the viewer the literary and visual traditions of the subjects.
However the ļ¬gure did not always have to be identiļ¬ed. In most cases the ļ¬gure was
just that. In a way, by having the unidentiļ¬able ļ¬gures, the piece of art was elevated in
divine status because it meant that there was still something to be attained in within
religious knowledge. The hybrid nature of divination as both ancient and yet Islamic as
well as a preservative way of Byzantium knowledge served the San Marco Cup well.
