Orientalism-asians are fundamentally diffferent: economic competition is a key force behind exclusion. Relating to economics: 1852 foreign miner"s tax (primarily geared towards chinese & mexican minors, 1913 & 1920 alien land laws (california) designed primarily to restrict japanese immigrants. Relating to social issues: anti-miscegenation laws (up until 1960"s, could be thrown in jail for marrying someone of a different race) 1922 cable act- white women who marry asians lose citizenship.
