Economic restructuring, urban rebellion, and the new labor movement. Industrial unions: organization of workers in a particular workplace, this includes organizing so called unskilled labor, examples: united auto workers, united steel workers, american federation of state. County, and municipal employees: rise of the iww (radical labor union) and cio. Causes of economic segmentation: exclusionary unions prevent black mobility even in times of economic growth, factory and research and design shift to suburban areas (segregated), leaving behind the inner city. From modernist or fordist to post-modernist or flexible production (think contract work) Fall of industrialized labor in 1970"s: increased employment in non-union sectors, corporate assaults on unions, rise of sweatshops, de-regulation, globalization. Poor urban infrastructure: lack of affordable housing, lack of adequate schooling, antagonistic relationships with law enforcement: watts 1965 and detroit 1967. Easy to go down hard to go up. A black man was pulled over and beat up. Deindustrialization and the bifurcation of the black community.
