ASIA AM 20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Chain Migration, Economic Mobility, Cultural Hegemony
Part II: Labor
Blue Collar, White Collar
Questions to consider:
● In what ways did international labor imigration affect developing and developed
countries?
○ 1965 Immigration Act
■ More class diversity, but socioeconomically bimodal: some doing well,
some doing poorly
● This is the “duality” of post 1965 immigration
● How has US immigration policy shaped Asian American communities, especially in the
post-WWII period?
○ Post WWII Changes in US immigration policy
■ Family reunification
■ Skilled labroers
○ Histories of immigration to the US
○ Economic globalization
When thinking about immigration of Filipinos, Vietnamese, etc, we have to consider their
relationship to their past colonizers and the influence of the latter on the former: (Spain to
Philippines, France to Vietnam, etc)
Pre- vs. post-1965 Asian Immigration
● Table shows great growth of immigration of Filipinos, Chinese, Asian Indians, Koreans,
but not Japanese
○ Filipinos have lots of American influence due to colonization, developing a skill
set that helps them assimilate into the US
○ Why not Japanese?
■ Japan is a developed country that provides work for the people there!
Changing perceptions
● Bifurcation of “The Oriental,” during WWII, in to “good” vs. “bad” Orientals
● We were allied with some of them (good) and fighting others (bad)
○ This can often shift; Japanese have been on both sides, good and bad
○ “How to tell Japs from Chinese,” “How to tell your friends from the Japs,”
■ “Those who know them best often rely on facial expression to tell them
apart: the Chinese expression is likely to be more placid, kindly, open; the
Japanese more positive, dogmatic, arrogant”
Global economic restructuring
● New stage in the development of capitalism
○ Capitalism=(a national model)
■ Free enterprise
