Character lists: (parents & children listed from oldest to youngest) Jose: patriarch 1st generation american; values family and sacrifices his life to being a great provider and role model for his children and wife. He quickly adapted to living in life in los angeles and enjoys gardening. He provides guidance for all of his children and is very forgiving. He is socially categorized as a mexican laborer. Maria: matriarch although she was a u. s. citizen, she was deported during the great depression while being pregnant. Latina mother figure because she is so dedicated to her family. Additionally, she manages to deal with the death of her son, her son being sent to prison, her daughter leaving the convent, and raising a grandson as a child of her own. She is socially categorized as an undocumented mexican immigrant.
