Document Summary

Lecture 8: the tradition and science of medicine. The knowledge of a physician is important. There has to be an art/science, or discipline, or medicine in such a way so that the rules for practicing medicine make medicine useful. To be considered an art or science, medicine must be useful, it must have established rules, basis for rules. There are some times when science becomes more of an art than a science, such as a experimental skill learned through experience. There are exact notions and there are conjectural notions. In absence of medical facilities, malpractice, etc. , a physician must convince you that he knows the science of medicine. It"s very important to be able to speak to laymen, includes avoiding esoteric language, meant to impress the ignorant. Methods have to be based on observations, which is then based on what is observable. Persuasive to show people that the knowledge you have is just an expansion of their own personal experiences.
